Women-led Resistance in Rojhelat and Iran: Protests and Prisoners

Since the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” uprising started after the killing of Jina Amini, the Iranian regime has been in a state of panic, but although the repressive apparatus is lashing out with all its might, the resistance continues. Women and girls, along with the rest of society, confronted brutal police crackdowns and demanded socio-political, gender, cultural, and economic freedoms. Their demand is clear: the overthrow of a regime that had for decades systematically denied them fundamental rights and freedoms. There are no precise figures, but sources suggest nearly 4.500 individuals have been detained and 750 executed in 2023. We will hear more about the situation of those facing repression and talk about how to support them.
Our first guest is Rojin Mukriyan, a member of KJAR (East Kurdistan Free Women’s Society). She will speak about the current situation of political prisoners in Rojhelat (Iranian-occupied Kurdistan) and Iran. More specifically, she will highlight the situation of four political prisoners: Zaynab Jalaliyan, Warisheh Moradi, Pakhshan Azizi, and Edris Faqihi. They are journalists, activists, or fighters for women and freedom with KJAR or the Party for Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK).
Our second speaker Mina will discuss more broadly the situation of political prisoners in Iran. They will highlight the situation of political prisoners held in custody during the Jin Jiyan Azadi movement in the fall and winter of 2022-2023, how they have been treated and what form of violence has been used to suppress them.
